Most of the field stories we tell start with a problem. A crew is losing pumps every few days, parts costs are climbing, and somebody finally picks up the phone. This one is different. A West Texas pressure pumping company told our sales team, more than once over several months, that they didn't have a sand problem. No rock shots, no unusual valve wear, nothing to fix. They agreed to a trial mostly to make the conversation stop.

A Trial Built to Prove a Negative

This operator was running local, dry, mine-gate sand — short haul, no third-party handling, no filtration device in service, because in their view there was nothing to filter. Their crews weren't logging rock intrusion events. Valve and seat changeouts were happening on a routine interval, and that interval had always just been treated as normal wear. By every measure this crew was tracking, the sand was clean.

We hear a version of that confidence often. It's a reasonable position on paper: short supply chain, mine-gate sourcing, no complaints from the field. So when this operator finally agreed to run the RKOTM for two weeks, it wasn't to solve a known issue. It was to settle a question neither side was fully sure of the answer to.

What the Screens Found

The answer showed up fast. Within the first 72 hours, the RKOTM screens had already captured well over an inch of small rock and foreign material — debris that had been moving directly into high-pressure pump iron on every single stage, the entire time, without ever announcing itself. That's the pattern we've written about before: dry sand doesn't give you the visibility that wet sand does. It flows clean through pneumatic lines and looks perfect right up until something fails. This crew simply hadn't had the failure yet.

No single event forced this operator's hand. That's what made the result worth writing about. The contamination wasn't hypothetical — it was sitting in the screen, three days in — but it also hadn't cost this crew a catastrophic pump-down. Most of the RKOTM stories we tell start with an operator who already knows they have a problem — repeated rock shots, a pattern of NPT they can't explain, a fluid end budget that keeps climbing. This one didn't. That's exactly the point. The case for post-blender filtration doesn't depend on an operator already knowing they have a rock problem. It depends on whether they're willing to look. Every crew that has run the RKOTM, even for a matter of days, has found something in the screen.

From Skeptic to Standard Equipment

The clearest proof point from this deployment isn't a chart. It's what the customer did next. A company that spent months telling us they didn't need this equipment reviewed the two-week data and moved to pursue full RKOTM adoption across their fleets. Nobody at that company set out to find hidden contamination or lost pumping hours. They set out to prove they were fine. The data told a different story, and they acted on it fast.

The Takeaway

If your crews aren't reporting rock shots, that's good information — but it isn't the same as clean sand. Local sourcing, a short haul, and a good reputation at the mine gate don't tell you what's happening between the silo and the blender tub, or what's been quietly shortening your valve and seat intervals without ever showing up as a single bad day. The only way to know is to filter it and look. This operator did, expecting to confirm they had no issue. Instead, they found the case for filtration in their own equipment records — and expanded the program before the ink was dry.
